Sur trois jours en octobre, Houma, Louisiana a accueilli le 15ème Festival annuel Voice of the Wetlands. Le festival fête la cuisine cajun, la culture louisianaise et bien plus tout en sensibilisant sur la perte des zones marécageuses en Louisiane du Sud.



Lancé par Tab Benoit en 2004, en tant qu'organisation sans but lucratif fonctionnant avec des volontaires, Voice of the Wetlands s'est développé depuis de façon exponentielle mais reste un Festival gratuit et ouvert au public. Il y a deux ans, le festival s'est étendu dans un nouvel emplacement pastoral et propose maintenant du camping et des sessions de bœufs tard le soir. D'après Tab Benoit, qui né et a grandi à Houma, le festival se concentre sur la préservation des habitats naturels, sujet vital qui lui tient tout particulièrement à cœur. « Je vis au cœur de cette zone, » a-t-il déclaré. « J'ai grandi sur 300 acres. Nous en n'avons plus que 40. C'est crucial. Dites à quelqu'un qui possède 300 acres de terre que dans 20 ans il n'en n'aura plus que 40. Personne n'a pris la terre. C'est juste qu'il n'y a plus de terre. C'est de l'eau à la place. Les endroits où j'ai écrit mes premières chansons n'existent plus. Les endroits où j'ai appris à jouer et à camper et à chasser et à pêcher ont disparus. C'est de l'eau partout maintenant. Avant, il y avait des marais avec des cyprès et des bayous et des arbres. Cela vous fait réfléchir quand cela arrive si vite. »
Une coalition d'artistes locaux et de leaders d'affaires ont reconnu l'urgence de sauver leurs maisons et la culture de la Louisiane du sud.


Depuis sa création, VOW a accueilli un certain nombre d'efforts dont un festival gratuit annuel de 3 jours depuis 2004 et une initiative audacieuse d'emmener plus de 50 musiciens de la Nouvelle Orléans pour jouer aux conventions nationales démocrate et républicaine de 2008. En outre, VOW a été représenté au gouvernement fédéral par Tab Benoit pendant les sessions au Capitol Hill en 2008. Les sessions se sont concentrées sur l'urgence de restaurer et le besoin de préserver les zones marécageuses de Louisiane.
Voice of the Wetland joue un rôle actif dans la sensibilisation pour restaurer les zones marécageuses à un niveau local et national. L'organisation est fière de maintenir une mission qui aborde tous les aspects, causes et solutions.
Voice of the Wetlands est la seule organisation de restauration des zones marécageuses et de la préservation culturelle comprenant des membres qui sont nés et qui ont grandi et continuent à vivre dans les communautés créées à partir des zones marécageuses de Louisiane.
Pour l'événement de la paroisse de Terrebonne de cette année, figurent à l'affiche Tab Benoit, Keith Stone, Eric McFadden, Doug Wimbish, Chubby Carrier et Louisiana Leroux.
Voice of the Wetlands All-Stars – L'activisme par le biais de la musique
Le supergroupe de Louisiane Voice of the Wetlands Allstars est constitué des meilleurs musiciens de Louisiane.

Les musiciens légendaires de Voice of the Wetlands All-stars travaillaient déjà ensemble avec les volontaires de Voice of the Wetland pour sensibiliser à l'érosion de la zone marécageuse de la Côte du Golfe avant l'ouragan Katrina. Ils continuent à jouer ensemble pour former une voix commune et attirer l'attention sur les problèmes auxquels font face les zones marécageuses de Louisiane. La musique du groupe est un aperçu de ce que vous pouvez entendre au New Orleans Jazz ou Blues Festival.
Récompensé aux 2012 Blues Music Awards par le prix “Entertainer of the Year”, Tab Benoit passionately allie sa musique et son activisme en même temps avec Cyril Neville des Neville Brothers et Meters, lauréat d'un Grammy Award, le gagnant du prix 2012 Blues Music Award, Johnny Sansone, un des meilleurs batteurs de New Orleans, le légendaire Johnny Vidacovich, le violoniste louisianais Waylon Thibodeaux, le grand chef des Indiens de Mardi Gras de New Orleans Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, et le bassiste Corey Duplechin.
Quelle que soit la hauteur de l'eau, ce groupe est là pour vous rappeler qu'il « n'y a pas de funk comme le funk de Louisiane » et que sans les Marécages de Louisiane, il n'y aurait pas de fantastique show comme celui-ci.

Over the course of three October days, Houma, LA hosted the 15th Annual Voice of the Wetlands Festival. The festival celebrates cajun cuisine, louisiana culture and more while driving awareness about the loss of the wetlands in southern Louisiana.
Launched by Tab Benoit in 2004 as a volunteer-based non-profit, Voice of the Wetlands has since grown exponentially but remains free and open to the public. Two years ago the festival was expanded to a new pastoral location and now includes camping and late night jam sessions. According to Benoit, who was born and raised in Houma, the festival’s focus on preserving natural habitats is vital and particularly important to him. “I live in the heart of it,” he said. “I grew up on 300 acres. We have 40 left. That’s a big deal. You tell anybody who has 300 acres of land in 20 years you’re going to have 40. It’s not that somebody took the land. It’s not land anymore. It’s open water. The places I wrote my first songs are gone. The places I learned to play and camp and hunt and fish are gone. It’s open water now. It used to be cypress swamps and bayous and trees. That hits home when it happens so fast.”
A coalition of local artists and business leaders recognized the urgency to save their homes and the culture of southern Louisiana.


Since its inception, VOW has hosted a number of efforts including an annual free, 3-day festival since 2004, and a bold initiative of taking over 50 New Orleans musicians to perform at the 2008 Democratic and Republican National Conventions. In addition, VOW has been represented to the federal government by Tab Benoit during sessions on Capitol Hill in 2008. The sessions focused on the urgency of restoring and the need to preserve the Louisiana wetlands.
Voice of the Wetlands takes an active role in driving awareness to restore the wetlands from a local to a national level. The organization prides itself in maintaining a mission that addresses all aspects, causes and solutions.
Voice of the Wetlands is the only cultural preservation and wetlands restoration organization comprised of members who were born and raised and continue to live in the communities created from Louisiana’s wetlands.
For this year’s Terrebonne Parish event, headlining appearances include Tab Benoit, Keith Stone, Eric McFadden, Doug Wimbish, Chubby Carrier and Louisiana Leroux.
Voice of the Wetlands All-Stars – Activism Through Music
The Louisiana supergroup the Voice of the Wetlands Allstars feature the “crème de la crème” of Louisiana musicians.

The legendary musicians of the Voice of the Wetlands All-stars were already working together with Voice of the Wetland’s volunteers to raise awareness of the erosion of the Gulf Coast wetlands before Hurricane Katrina. They continue to perform together as a common voice to bring attention to the problems that Louisiana’s wetlands face. The groups music is a cross-cut of what you may expect to hear at a New Orleans Jazz or Blues festival.
2012 Blues Music Awards “Entertainer of the Year” Tab Benoit passionately locks into his music and his activism at the same time along with Grammy award winning Cyril Neville of the Neville Brothers and Meters, 2012 Blues Music Award winner Johnny Sansone, New Orleans premiere drummer the legendary Johnny Vidacovich, Louisiana Fiddler Waylon Thibodeaux, the big chief of New Orleans Mardi Gras Indians Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, and bassist Corey Duplechin.
No matter how high the water gets this band is here to remind you that “There Ain’t No Funk Like Louisiana Funk” and without Louisiana’s Wetlands there would not be a great performance like this one.

Since 2004 the Voice of the Wetland’s mission has been to make the world aware of the importance of South Louisiana Wetlands. The Voice of the Wetlands All-stars help us to create that awareness by touring around the country as our Wetland’s Ambassadors.

Les chars et défilés de Mardi Gras à la Nouvelle Orléans

Les défilés sont les festivités principales de Mardi Gras, mais un défilé n'est rien sans de magnifiques chars. Depuis que les Krewes (ou confréries, les structures qui organisent les défilés ou les bals du Carnaval) ont commencé à défiler dans la Nouvelle Orléans il y a plus de 100 ans, les chars des défilés ont joué un rôle très important dans l'histoire de Mardi Gras. Certains chars sont élaborés et superbes, alors que d'autres sont amusants et satyriques. De nombreux Krewes ont un thème pour leur défilé chaque année et les chars sont donc créés pour représenter ces thèmes; Des milliers de dollars sont dépensés pour la fabrication de ces chars et ils ne se font pas en une nuit. Les Krewes travaillent sur ces créations toute l'année, souvent dans des « antres » secrets dans la ville. Les Krewes prennent leurs chars très au sérieux. Tuba Skinny (Version française)

Formé en 2009, Tuba Skinny a évolué avec constance d’un ensemble hétéroclite de musiciens de rue en un véritable groupe se consacrant à diffuser le son traditionnel de la Nouvelle Orléans auprès de publics du monde entier. S’inspirant d’une large gamme d’influences musicales, des spirituals au blues de l’ère post Dépression, du ragtime au jazz traditionnel, leur répertoire évoque la richesse de l’héritage musical de leur ville, La Nouvelle Orléans. Le groupe a d’ailleurs gagné sa notoriété et des fans loyaux grâce à ce son distinct, leur engagement à faire revivre des chansons oubliées et leurs performances live enflammées.   Formed in 2009, Tuba Skinny has steadily evolved from a loose collection of street musicians into a solid ensemble dedicated to bringing the traditional New Orleans sound to audiences around the world.
